Autumn brought a lovely start to the MEA’s 91st year!
There’s great interest in the monthly Student Recitals thanks to Yudit Terry’s welcoming manner and encouragement for students and families to lose themselves to the music and enjoy an afternoon of musical performances. The Scherzo Club continues to be popular thanks to Barbara Landi Hause’s leadership. Join in the fun!
The first-ever meeting of MEA’s Composers’ Corner was wildly successful! There were almost a baker’s dozen in attendance, sharing ideas, supporting each other, and sampling each other’s original compositions with informal performances. I encourage the composers amongst us to attend the next meeting on Thursday, March 28.
Thanks again, to Marcia Maull, for handling the enthusiastic response to the October Theory tests registration. Be sure to take advantage of this valuable student program again in March.
Warmest congratulations to Charlene Step, Honors Recital Chair, and her Committee on the success of another consecutive year of three Honors Recitals in one afternoon! Bravi to all the students who received ‘honors’ and were invited to perform, and to their dedicated teachers who prepared them for this prestigious competition!
I am proud to announce that our own Scholarships Committee Co-Chair, Sondra Tammam, was awarded NJMTA’s prestigious "Teacher of the Year" award at the November NJMTA State Conference in Princeton. Warmest congratulations, Sondra!
Looking ahead, are the Annual Piano Competition, the Eric Steiner Composition Competition, and the Original Composition Festival. Co-Chairs, Anna Katznelson and Barbara Landi Hause, and Chair Kathy Knittel ably run these events, respectively. Please join us for the winners’ recitals next March and May.
We continue to offer incredible programs at our monthly meetings! Mark your calendars so you won’t miss hearing wonderful presenters who broaden our perspectives and help “keep the spark alive”, as Ingrid Clarfield demonstrated at our first-ever Outreach Social event in October. Some presenters come from as far away as Europe, and in November, Julia Osinchuk joined us from Alaska! Thanks to Programs Chair, Sophia Agranovich, and her Committee for arranging our fantastic monthly programs. Our Teachers’ Master Class with esteemed pedagogue, Joseph Kalichstein, is March 21. Join us!
There is much to be proud of and a lot of great ways to expand our own horizons through participation in MEA events. Don’t miss out on being part of our exciting association. If you can lend a hand – please let us know. If you’re new to the MEA, please introduce yourself at the next General Meeting. Welcome!
I look forward to seeing more and more of you in attendance each month. Wishing you all a healthy, happy and fulfilling musical 2019!
Musically yours,
Nancy Modell, President
